LIVING AND BELIEVING THE WORD OF GOD

(Christian Living 14)

The Lord Jesus said, “The Words I have spoken to you – they are full of the Spirit and Life” (John 6:63 -NIV). He also said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away” (Matt.24: 5). Again, He said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the Mouth of God” (Matt.4:4).

These Words of Jesus should inspire every person, especially the Christian, to desire and want to read the Bible and live by it. His Words are “full of the Spirit and Life” – that means we will be spiritually “resurrected” and have divine power to live a “full life”. Jesus promised us: “I have come to give them life and life more abundantly” (John 10:10b). If we believe Him and His Words and give our life to follow Him, we will surely experience this fullness of life. The Apostle John wrote, “Of His Fullness have we all received – grace upon grace” (Jn 1:16). The NIV translates “grace upon grace” as “one blessing after another”. How wonderful!

The Promises of Jesus will last for life: “Heaven and earth will pass away but My Words will never pass away”. That is WHY we should read God’s Word and claim the promises the Lord has given us children of faith. The Bible affirms: “The promises of God in Christ are “Yes” and “Amen” to the Glory of God” (2 Cor.1:20). We must believe and live by God’s Word then our life will be blessed and our faith will grow strong. That’s why Paul exhorts the Christians to let “the Word of Christ dwell richly in you as you teach and admonish one another in all wisdom” (Col.3:16). To let His Word “dwell richly” in us is to meditate and keep them in our hearts and spirit man, so that it will divinely perform its purpose in giving us richness of life.

Our God is the Faithful God and He will fulfill His Word and promises to His people. He gave this assurance to the Prophet Jeremiah: “The Lord said to me, "I am watching to see that My Word is fulfilled." (Jer.1:2). Then He also said to His people, “As the rain and the snow come down from Heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the Sower, and bread for the eater, so is My Word that goes out from My Mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-12 -NIV). Amen and Amen!

What great assurance we should have in God’s Word and His promises. We should then desire and hunger for His Word like the newborn baby yearns for his mother’s milk. That is what the Apostle Peter exhorted the persecuted saints: “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious” (1 Pet.2:2-3 – NKJV). The Word of God will sustain and increase their faith to withstand the severe persecution they were facing. We should prepare ourselves with His Word in peace time, so that when hard times come, we will remain steadfast and strong in faith. We will then be able to live in victory and be the salt and light in the world.
