ELOHIM
(The Names Of God: TNOG 1)
The Names of God depict the Nature and Character of God. Each Name conveys a particular character and work of God. God reveals Himself by each Name in a particular circumstance or event to show His people Who He is and what He stands for. If the believer wants to know his God well, then learning the Names of God in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, will enable him to get a glimpse of the many-faceted “face” of this Great God he loves and worships. This will enhance our knowledge of Him and make us love and trust Him more.
The first Name of God revealed in the Bible is “Elohim” which the English language translates as “God”. This appears in Gen.1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. The Bible introduces Elohim as the Creator God. This word “Elohim” is the plural form of God, suggesting The Trinity of Persons, when God said, “Let us make man in Our Image, according to Our Likeness” (Gen.1:26).
The basic meaning of “Elohim” is “the Strong One”, “Mighty Leader” and “Supreme Deity”. It also suggests plenitude of power and majesty. This is the great Supreme God we believe and worship; there is none like Him in Heaven above or earth below. God declares Himself as the “God of gods” and “Lord of lords” (Deut.10:17; Psa.136:2; Dan.2:47; 11:36).
There is no God like our God, and none can compare with Him. Hence, He demands the worship of all peoples of the world, Whom He has created for Himself. The 24 Elders bow before His Throne in Heaven and declare: “Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive Glory and Honour and Power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created” (Rev.4:11-NASV).
In Isaiah 40, God Himself challenges people to consider His Greatness as the Creator God: “To whom then would you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him? To whom then will you liken Me that I should be His equal? Says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see Who has created these stars; the One Who leads forth their host by number. He calls them by name; because of the Greatness of His might and the Strength of His Power, not one of them is missing” (v.18, 25,26). Who can we compare Him to? The obvious answer is “No one”! As we often sing: “We worship You, Almighty God; There is none like You”!
This is the great God we trust and believe in. That is why the Bible says, “With God nothing is impossible” (Luke 1:37). So, what is your problem? Why are you hesitant? Why do you worry so much? This great God is our Father who loves us and cares for us. He is the God of miracles because He is the Creator. Nothing is too hard for Him!
Hence the Bible says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God; for he who comes to Him must believe that He is (the Creator God of Gen.1:1), and is a Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
