EL ELYON - GOD MOST HIGH

(The Names Of God: TNOG 5)

This Name, EL ELYON, first appeared in Gen.14: 18-22 when Melchizedek was introduced to Abram as the “Priest of God Most High” and he blessed Abram. This Name appears three times in this passage and over 30 times in the Psalms alone. El Elyon emphasizes and pictures God‘s Strength and Sovereignty. The “Most High” suggests that no one is higher and greater than the Sovereign God and Lord of all. He is the God of gods and the Lord of lords!

In the Book of Daniel this Name appears 13 times, each emphasizing the Greatness and Power of God in His sovereign rule over kings and nations. “The Most High is Sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes” (4:27,32). That is why the Apostle Paul says that “the authorities that exist have been established by God” (Rom.13:1); and that Christians are to submit to the authorities God has appointed over them. So, no Government or Authority is elected or appointed without the approval of God. Our responsibility is to pray that God’s Sovereign Will is done in the choice of leadership.

The Psalms magnify the Sovereign Power of God in constant praise, especially in His Protection over His people who are called “holy ones” or “saints”. The Psalmist said, “My Shield is God Most High, Who saves the upright in heart” (7:10). He protects and saves His people on one condition: “If you make the Most High your dwelling—even the LORD, who is my Refuge— then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (91:9-11). Regrettably, many Christians do not experience this because they do not make the Lord their “Dwelling”. That means we must abide in the Presence of God all the time. Only abiding in the Presence of God daily will guarantee divine protection for us and our family!

Melchizedek blessed Abram and praised God for His deliverance: “Blessed be God Most High Who delivered your enemies into your hand” (v.20). Earlier, Abram’s nephew Lot had been taken captive by the combined armies of four powerful kings. Abram went to rescue Lot with 318 of his servants and defeated the five kings and rescued Lot. His small “home-made” army went against tremendous odds and miraculously defeated thousands of seasoned soldiers. The reason: “The Most High delivered your enemies into your hand”, just He delivered Goliath into the hands of a teenage boy called David. This is the God Most High we serve— just trust Him! God Most High is our Protector and Deliverer and we must trust Him with all our heart and rest in His Promise that He will always be with us.

Let us heed the Lord’s command: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). To “be still” means to “cease from all our strivings” and just wait on God in faith. The Lord Jesus Who is God invites us: “Come to Me…and I will give you rest” (Matt.11:28). So let us rejoice and thank God that HE is our Help and our Hope (Psalm 146:5).
