EL OLAM – THE ETERNAL GOD

(The Names Of God: TNOG 8)

El Olam reminds us that our God is the God of Eternity. That means that He never changes and that He remains the same forever and ever; also, what He promises He will keep forever..“He is the same yesterday, today and forever” (Heb.13:8). That is why He is also known as the Faithful God Who keeps His Covenant with His people: “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the Faithful God, keeping His Covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands” (Deut.7:9).

This Name was first used by Abraham when he planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba (“well of the seven” or “well of the oath”) after he made a covenant with Abimelech in Gen.21:33: “...and there he called on the LORD, the Everlasting God” (El Olam). The Psalmist said of God: “From everlasting to everlasting Thou art God”(90:2). This implies that everything in Creation will pass away and come to an end, but God will remain and remains the same. He is there before Creation and He will be there still after Creation comes to an end.

The Prophet Jeremiah says of God, “The LORD is the True God; He is the Living God and the Everlasting King” (10:10). Moses says of Him, “The LORD shall reign forever and ever” (Exod.15:18). The LORD is both God and King and He reigns over Heaven and earth forever and ever. That means everything in Heaven and earth is under His control and He determines or decrees their destinies. This Eternal God is also our Heavenly Father. How wonderful!

Those of us who truly trust in Him will not fear, as the promise goes: “The Eternal God is your Refuge, and underneath are the Everlasting Arms. He will drive out your enemies before you…” (Deut.33:27). He is always there for us and His Protecting Arms surround us all the time. When we walk by faith, we feel secure and we are assured of His Presence and Protection. There is no time at all that He is not with us! He is with us even to the end of the age (Matt.11:28). In the prophecy of Isaiah regarding Christ, He is called “the Everlasting Father” (9:6); meaning that He is God.

In the Book of Revelation, Christ refers to Himself as “the Alpha and Omega”, “the Beginning and the End”, “the First and the Last”. The implication of all these is that “Christ and the Father are One” - as the Father so is Christ. That is why He can accept worship and all men must worship Him. No man on earth can be worshipped apart from Christ Himself.

Because of Who He is, we can trust Him absolutely and accept His Word wholeheartedly; for He said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35). Because He is Eternal, so His Words will also be eternal. Therefore, we can trust and hang on to His Promises: “For all the Promises of God in Christ Jesus are “Yes” and “Amen” to the Glory of God” (2 Cor.1:20). He is the Faithful God Who keeps His Word. “Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the Eternal Rock” (Isa.26:4 -NLT). HALLELUJAH!
