ATTIQ YOMIN: THE ANCIENT OF DAYS
(The Names Of God: TNOG 19)
This Name of God (in Aramaic-Hebrew) appears in Daniel 7:9 in which Daniel describes a vision of Heaven where an Ancient Person sits on a Flaming Throne with wheels of fire. The Person's white hair and the title "Ancient" indicate that God existed before time began. Daniel writes: "As I looked, Thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His Seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of His Head was white like wool. His Throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze” (NIV). The words “Ancient Of Days” are a way of describing that God is Eternal: “Who was, Who is and Who is to come” and that He controls the past, the present and the future. He is the Beginning and the End.
In Isaiah 43:13, God refers to Himself as existing from "ancient days", meaning before days were created: “I have revealed and saved and proclaimed — I, and not some foreign god among you. You are My witnesses," declares the Lord, "that I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I Am He. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?" (43:12-13) This affirms that God is Eternal. He was before the beginning of time. Genesis tells us that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (1:1). Therefore, He has all Authority over Heaven and earth, and that every knee must bow before Him in worship.
It is obvious that the Ancient of Days is God the Father. In Daniel 7:10 we are told that He is the Judge in the Court of Heaven: “A River of Fire was flowing, coming out from before Him.Thousands upon thousands attended Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The Court was seated, and the Books were opened”. In Revelation we see a similar scene at the Judgement of the Great White Throne: “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and the Books were opened…And the dead were judged according to their works by the things which were written in the Books” (20:11). Daniel 7:22 tells us specifically that the Ancient of Days is the One who pronounced judgment.
In Daniel 7 we also see a transfer of power between God and Jesus: "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a Son of Man, coming with the clouds of Heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His Presence. He was given Authority, Glory, and Sovereign Power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped Him. His Dominion is an Everlasting Dominion that will not pass away, and His Kingdom is one that will never be destroyed” (Dan.7:13-14 – NIV}. This is a prophecy of the Lordship of Christ after His Exaltation recorded for us in Philippians 2:9-11. This is also a fulfillment of God’s end time purpose in glorifying His Beloved Son: "The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever." (Rev11:15). Jesus will reign as the King of kings and the Lord of lords in that Day. So it is wise to ensure that we make Him Lord and King today – before it is too late!
