EL GIBBOR – THE MIGHTY GOD
(The Names Of God: TNOG 20)
El Gibbor means "Mighty God" and occurs 159 times in the Hebrew Bible. It is made up of two parts:"strong" or "mighty" and "El" which means "Yahweh". The verb gabar (be strong, accomplish, excel, prevail) is from a root word commonly associated with warfare and has to do with the strength and power of a mighty warrior.
The word “mighty” is used as an attribute of God especially as fighting for his people. The Psalmist declared Him as such: “Who is the King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty; the LORD mighty in battle” (24:8). Moses also declared, “For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, mighty and awesome…” (Deut.10:17) Jeremiah proclaimed: "Ah, Lord God, You, (El-Gibbor) are the LORD Almighty. You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You” (Jer.32:17-18). We often sing the song, “What a Might God we serve…Angels bow before Him; Heaven and earth adore Him; What a Mighty God we serve”. Amen.
Zephaniah gives a wonderful promise to His people who will come to faith in the Messiah in the latter days, but it is also a promise for the saints of all ages. He said, "The LORD your God is in your midst. He is Mighty (Gibbor) to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will quiet you with His Love He will rejoice over you with singing." (Zeph 3:17).
Spurgeon remarks: "What a word is this! Jehovah God in the Center of His people in all the majesty of His power! This Presence alone suffices to inspire us with peace and hope. Treasures of boundless might are stored in our MIGHTY GOD, and He dwells in the midst of His people; therefore, may His people shout for joy.” Let us always thank God for taking delight in us, because of His great love in redeeming us and making us His sons and daughters in Christ Jesus. Let us be blessed and assured of His Presence daily in us.
The Name “Mighty God” is referred to Jesus the Messiah in the Prophecy of Isaiah written 700 years before He was born: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the Government will be upon His Shoulder. And His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). This is to emphasize the Deity of Jesus the Christ Who will be the Saviour of the world. Jesus the Mighty God will save His people from their sins (Matt.1:21). The Name “Jesus” actually means “God of Salvation”.
As we celebrate the coming Season of Christmas, let us be bold to proclaim the Good News of Jesus as the Saviour Who is Mighty to save. There is no other Name under Heaven given among men Who can save us except Jesus, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the
World. He is also the Prince of Peace Who reconciles the Holy God and sinners by His Atoning Sacrifice: “God made Him Who knew no sin to become sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor.5:21). GLORY TO GOD!
