JESUS CHRIST – SAVIOUR & LORD
(The Names Of God: TNOG 21)
The Name “JESUS” means “The Lord is Salvation”. Hence the angel’s instruction to Joseph about the Child to be born: “You shall give Him the Name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matt.1:21). Jesus was born to be the Saviour of the world. When the angel proclaimed His Birth to the shepherds on the hillside, he said, “Fear not, for I bring you good tidings of great joy, for unto you is born this day, a Saviour Who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11). He is worthy and able to be the Saviour because He is “Christ the Lord”.
The Name “CHRIST” means “Messiah” or “One Anointed to be King”. This is the fulfillment of many OT prophecies regarding the Messiah who will reign in the Millennium. He is qualified to be King and Saviour because He is “Christ the Lord”. This speaks of His Deity as Paul later mentioned that Christ is “the Fullness of the Godhead Bodily” (Col.1:19; 2:9-10). Because He is God then can Jesus be truly the Saviour of the world.
In the OT God declares to His people, “There is no other God besides Me, a Just God and Saviour; There is none besides Me. Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I Am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:21-22). Jesus Christ is this God of the Old Testament Who is the Saviour of all mankind. He will save us from all our sins. Thus Peter declares, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Jesus Christ came into the world to redeem us through His death on the Cross as the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins. This is to manifest God’s Great Love for mankind in sending His Son to be our Saviour. This is the message and meaning of Christmas: Christ came into the world to save sinners and to give us the Hope of Heaven and Eternal Life. As John 3:16 promises us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have Eternal Life”.
There is the Hope of Eternal Life and Heaven because Christ not only died for our sins, but on the third day He also rose again from the dead. A dead Saviour is not good news. Only a Risen Saviour guarantees Salvation and Justification. Hence the Bible says, “Christ died for our sins and rose again for our justification” (Rom.4:25). Jesus Christ is the Resurrection and the Life and those who believe in Him will live eternally when they die. Jesus said, “Because I live, you also shall live” (John 14:19). Therefore, there is no more fear of death and the grave for all believers; for death is only the stepping stone to Heaven and Eternal Life. Praise God!
The Bible gives us this promise of faith: “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him” (1 Thes.4:14). Let us thank God for His Death and Resurrection and the Hope of Heaven and Eternal Glory because of His Love and Grace in sending Jesus to be our Saviour and Lord! AMEN.
