JESUS CHRIST – THE PRINCE OF PEACE
(The Names Of God: TNOG 22)
In the Prophecy of Isaiah regarding the Messiah Who is to come, He is called “The Prince of Peace” in addition to the other titles, “The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father…” (Isa.9:6). This tells us that the Messiah is Deity – God Himself Who became Man in the Person of Jesus Christ. When the angels announced the Birth of Christ, they sang, “Glory to God in the Highest Heaven, and on earth Peace to those on whom His Favor rests” (Lk 2:14). That implies that Jesus was born to bring Peace on earth among men who find favor with God.
Christ is called The Prince of Peace because He came to restore the broken relationship between God and mankind. The Bible says that because of our sins, mankind has become enemies of God and separated from Him. But Christ through His Death on the Cross brought reconciliation: “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the Death of His Son, how much more having been reconciled, we shall be saved through His (Resurrected) Life” (Rom.5:10). Paul tells us that “Now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the Blood of Christ. For He Himself is our Peace…” (Eph.2:13-14). So, let us be thankful that Jesus came to bring Peace with God by reconciling sinners to a Holy God through the forgiveness of sins by His Atoning Sacrifice on the Cross.
Christ Jesus also came to give us Peace within – Peace of heart and soul. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My Peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). In this troubled world – with all its uncertainties and disturbing circumstances – people are so often filled with worries and fear. Hence this Promise of Jesus is so comforting and make the experience of Peace a reality when we trust in Him: “My Peace I give to you…let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid”. So let us trust Him fully with all our hearts.
The Lord Jesus will also still our hearts with His Peace when we seek God in prayer. During such times when we feel worried, we have the Promise of God’s Word: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the Peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil.4:6-7). So why worry when you can pray?
Instead of focusing on the uncertainties and worries, we should let our minds concentrate on Who God is and trust in Him. Here is God’s Promise to us: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord is Everlasting Strength” (Isaiah 26:3-4). The exhortation of Paul to his readers was “Let the Peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one Body and be thankful” (Col.3:15). Let us just keep thanking God for His Peace that is already in us through Christ Jesus. Hallelujah! Glory to God in the Highest Heaven! AMEN.
