JESUS CHRIST – THE ALPHA AND OMEGA

(The Names Of God: TNOG 23)

Jesus declared “I Am the Alpha and the Omega Who is, and Who was, and Who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8). He also said, “I Am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (21:6; 22:13). Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet to denote “the whole of anything, from beginning to end”. Jesus as the Beginning and End of all things is a reference to the One True God. This statement of Eternality could apply only to God. It is seen especially in Revelation 22:13, where Jesus proclaims Himself as ,“Who was, Who is and Who is to come, the Almighty”.

Jesus as the “Alpha and Omega” means that He was at the beginning of all things and will be at the close. It means He always existed and always will exist. John tells us He was there in the beginning with God as the Eternal Word (John 1:1-2). It was Christ, as Second Person of the Trinity, Who was at the Creation of the heavens and the earth in Genesis when God said, “Let us make man in Our Image and Likeness”.

John also tells us it was Jesus Who brought about the Creation: “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3). Paul also reiterated this: “For in Him all things were created: things in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers, or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Col.1:16-17). The Bible also tells us that His Second Coming will be the beginning of the end of creation as we know it (2 Peter 3:10). As God Incarnate, He has no Beginning, nor will He have any End with respect to time, being from everlasting to everlasting.

Jesus as the “Alpha and Omega” identifies Him as YAHWEH, the God of the Old Testament. The Prophet Isaiah ascribes this aspect of Jesus’ Nature as part of the Triune God in the following passages: “I, the Lord, am the First, and with the Last I am He” (41:4). “I am the First, and I am the Last; and beside Me there is no God” (44:6). “I am He; I am the First, I also am the Last” (48:12). These are clear references of the Eternal Nature of the Godhead.

Christ, as the Alpha and Omega, is also “the Author and Finisher” of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), implying that He begins it and carries it through to completion, which gives us the confidence “that He Who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the Day of Christ Jesus” (Phil.1:6). Jesus as God and Lord will be faithful to the end, and promises that “He Who called you is faithful, Who also will do it” (1 Thress.5:24). He called us to Himself, saved us and will continue to uphold us and establish us in faith and in holiness. So let us trust Him as we enter the New Year 2025. Let us heed Solomon’s exhortation: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path” (Prov.3:5-6)
