JESUS – THE ETERNAL GOD

(The Names Of God: TNOG 30)

Jesus said to the Jews, “Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM” (John 8:58). This is His seventh claim of Deity in John Gospel. He said this in answer to what they said, “You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham!” (v.57). Here Jesus is claiming to be God Who is from the Beginning. He is claiming Eternity. At this the Jews picked up stones to stone Him, for to them this claim of Jesus was blasphemous.

Jesus is saying that He is the Self-existing God without beginning or end. He was with His Father from Eternity past. He was always there even before Abraham. He also said, “I AM the Alpha and the Omega - Who is, and Who was, and Who is to come, the Almighty… "I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End…I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev.:8; 21:6;22:13.) In the Prophecy of Isaiah, Jesus is declared as “The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father” (9:6). He also claimed that He and His Father are One (John 10:30), and that He is Equal with the Father (John 5:17-18). Not only did He claim to be God, but He also claimed to have the Power of God.

In His Gospel, John tells us that Jesus was the Word in the beginning with God: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” (John 1:1-3). Then the Word came into history and lived among us, as Jesus of Nazareth: “The Word became flesh and made His Dwelling among us. We have seen His Glory, the Glory of the One and Only Son, Who came from the Father, full of Grace and Truth” (Jn 1:14).

This is reason why only Jesus can save mankind from their sins. Being God He is Holy and Perfect and has Divine Power to save by giving up His Life as “the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins…God made Him Who knew no sin to become sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (1 John 4:10; 2Cor.5:21). Good works and religion cannot save us because they do not take away our sins. No one on earth can take away our sins because all are sinners. Only Jesus can save: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” Hence, the Promise of God: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 4:12; 16:31).

Knowing Who Jesus is – the Eternal God- gives us believers the assurance that our salvation is guaranteed and that we have the Hope of Heaven and Eternal Life. Jesus said, “Very Truly I tell you, whoever hears My Word and believes on Him Who sent Me has Eternal Life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life” (Jn 5:24). Not only that, Jesus has the power to change our lives for the better when we believe and make Him our Lord and Savior. The Bible says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor.5:17). 17). Praise the Lord!
