REMINDERS AND REFLECTIONS

(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 1)

Reminders are important because we are very forgetful people. Reminders help us to remember the important things of life - especially the Goodness and Blessings of God in our lives. This will make us more thankful and appreciative of God’s love and mercies. They also help to stir us up spiritually and cause us to live more committed lives.

The Apostle Peter, during his last days, wrote about why he keeps reminding his readers the things that matter: “So I always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the Truth. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made it clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things” (2 Pet.1:12-15).

This is the main reason why the Lord Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper: “The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took Bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My Body which for you; do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way, He took the Cup, saying, “This Cup is the New Covenant in My Blood, do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me” (1Cor.11:23-25). The Lord’s Supper is an everlasting reminder of His Love and Sacrifice, “until He comes”. It is meant also to cause us to reflect on our devotion and attitude towards Him and His sacrifice for us.

After writing to his spiritual son about the disciplines of the ministry of multiplying disciples, Paul advised him: Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead…This is my Gospel for which I am suffering…” (2 Tim.2:7-9). Paul is telling Timothy that serving God is not a bed of roses, but rather there are hardships and suffering along the way. In order to succeed and be victorious, he should reflect on the things he has been taught and to remember Jesus Christ” Who also suffered but was raised to victory by the Father. For this same reason the Writer to the Hebrews wrote to encourage the persecuted saints: “Consider Him Who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Heb.12:3).

In this regard, when the going gets tough and the way seems difficult because of hardship and persecution, we need to reflect on the words of our Lord: Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his Master’. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed My Teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of My Name, for they do not know the One Who sent Me” (John 15:20-21).

Let us be reminded that Christ tells us that as His disciples, we are to “deny yourself, take up the Cross daily and follow Me” (Lk 9:23). When we are willing, His Grace will be sufficient, and He will be with us always, even to the end of the world. AMEN.
