PROTECT YOUR MIND
(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 3)
The Bible tells us regarding man – that ”As he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Prov.23:7 - NKJV). You are or will become what you think you are, especially when it is etched in your heart all the time. When one thinks that he is “useless” and “good for nothing” – he will never go far because of this mentality. Good or bad will be the result of our persistent thinking.
The devil attacks our minds and wants to make us losers or make us evil or godless. The Bible says that he, “the god of this world blinds the minds” of unbelievers so that they will not believe in the Gospel and come to Christ. He attacks the minds of believers with worldly thinking to make them ineffective. When Jesus revealed to His disciples that He would be crucified, Peter rebuked Jesus to deter Him. Our Lord said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not mindful of the things of God but the things of men” (Mk 8:33 - NKJV). Satan had infiltrated the mind of Peter because he was worldly in his thinking! That is why the Bible warns us against worldly wisdom: “Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from Heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic” (Jas 3:15). So let us be careful and protect our minds!
When the mind is idle – that is, allowing the mind to wander, then the devil takes advantage by putting his ideas into it. That is why we have a saying: “The idle mind is the workshop of the devil!” Hence, meditating on the Word of God is so important. We also need to guard our thinking by dwelling on the right things. The Bible exhorts: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things” (Phil.4:8).
Hence, we need to protect our minds from the deception of the world and the devil. Paul exhorts the believers to be transformed by renewing their minds and “do not let the world squeeze you into its mold” (Rom.12:2 -JB Philips). We are exhorted to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new man” (Eph.4:23-24). It is the Holy Spirit who renews our minds as we continually walk in the Spirit and keep in step with Him (Gal.5:16, 23).
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for in the LORD is everlasting strength”
(26:2-3 -NKJV). That is good and safe advice. Notice the blessings of “staying” our mind on God. This means to continually focus our mind and thinking on the LORD Himself. He gives us “perfect peace” when we meditate on Him. Our minds must always be on Him.
Thinking much about God creates faith in Him and helps is to trust Him “forever” – that is, we will never be shaken or become fearful by negative thinking. We will then trust Him with all our heart and we will receive “everlasting strength” physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The devil will never be able to infiltrate our mind and cause us harm. God’s Holy Spirit will guard our mind and fill it with His God-thoughts. HALLELUJAH!
