BE FAITHFUL IN PRAYING FOR MISSIONS

(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 15)

Our Lord Jesus gave a Plea and a Command: “When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, "The Harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the Harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." (Mat.9:26-38 – NKJV). The plentiful harvest today numbers three billion people who have not heard about Jesus. We call them “Unreached People Groups” in missions. Most of them are in Asia.

Jesus was moved with compassion when He saw the multitudes like sheep without a shepherd. So, He preached to them the Kingdom of God, healed the sick and delivered them from the oppression of demons and evil spirits. May we also be moved likewise as we see the 3 billion heading for a lost eternity without Christ. The Bible says that their blood will be on our hands should they die without being warned about their eternal destiny if they do not know Christ as their Lord and Savior (Ezek.3:18-19).

After seeing the need of the Harvest, Jesus then gave a command: “Therefore, pray the Lord of the Harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." This shows that our Lord wants us to take responsibility for the Harvest before us. They must be reached with the Gospel in our generation, and the only way is to pray for harvesters to go and reap the Harvest for Jesus. The command to pray will stir the Holy Spirit, the Lord of the Harvest, to call and send out harvesters to reach the souls who are perishing without Christ (John 3:16 -18). As we obey Christ and pray earnestly for the Harvest, God will do something. Likely He will move us to be involved in missions in some way.

Our God is a Missionary God and He is concerned for the souls heading into a lost eternity. That is why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners. The Bible says, “God demonstrates His Love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom.5:8).That is also why He gave us the Great Commission: “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). Notice the words, “into all the world” and “to the whole creation”. That means every person in every nation and in each succeeding generation must hear the Good News that Christ died to save sinners from eternal damnation. Are you concerned about them?

If we are concerned and really love God and souls, then we need to obey the two commands of Jesus: “Pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send out laborers” and “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel” to everyone. Jesus said, “If you love Me, obey My commands” (John 14:5). Let us prove our love for Him by obeying His two commands: Pray and Go! The Holy Spirt will teach us how to pray for the Harvest and empower us to witness for Him and reap the Harvest (Rom.8:26-27; Acts 1:8). Let us be obedient disciples and glorify Him!
