GROWING IN SPIRITUAL MATURITY - Part 2
(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 25)
The Christian as a committed disciple must grow in spiritual maturity to be strong in faith by being fully committed to Christ as Lord, grow in the knowledge of God’s Word and disciplined in Worship and Prayer. These are only the basic steps in the process of growing in faith and discipleship. We need to do more if we really desire to go on to spiritual adulthood and usefulness in the service of God. The following are steps we need to take to do that:
1. Love the Lord Wholeheartedly: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” {Matt.22:37). This is putting God first in life, so that all the decisions we make are for Him, to please and glorify Him. This is no small matter, as it takes total dedication and surrender to the will and purposes of God in our life.
2. Walk in Obedience to His Word and Commands: Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments…he who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him” (John 14:15, 21). Obedience is also proof of His Lordship in our life: “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46). Is Jesus truly Lord in your life?
3. Trust God Completely with Your Life: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path” (Prov. 3:5-6). We should not trust our own wisdom for we do not know everything. God says, “My thoughts are higher than your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways…For as the heavens
are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” {Isaiah 55:8-9).
4. Walk in the Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit take over your life: “For those who are led by the Spirit are the children of God” {Rom.8:14). The Holy Spirit is the Power of God in our life and He will help us to overcome temptation and sin: “Walk in the Spirit and you will not gratify the lusts of the flesh…Since we live in the Spirit let us keep in step with the Spirit” {Gal,5:16,25). He is also our Guide and leads us in the way of Truth: “When He the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all Truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is to come” {John 16:13).
5. Seek God’s Kingdom First: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt.6:33). We are sons and citizens of God’s Kingdom, so we do not live like those in the kingdom of darkness. Our final Destination is Heaven, so let us always live with eternity in mind. That means whatever do must count for eternity. That is what Jesus meant when He said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” {Mattt.6:19-21). Let us live wisely for God and for His Glory!
