WISDOM IN WITNESSING FOR CHRIST

(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 28)

Jesus told the disciples to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matt.10:16) when He sent them out to preach. When we are interacting with people, especially when talking to them about Jesus the Savior, we need to do that so we will not cause misunderstanding or friction by our attitude. Being wise is to be led by the Holy Spirit Who gives us wisdom and to be harmless as doves is to be gentle like Jesus. Our Lord said, “Learn of Me, for I am humble and gentle in heart” (Matt.11:29).

The Apostle Paul exhorted the Church in times of persecution: “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col.4:5-6). The NKJV says “Walk in wisdom” which involves our life behavior, attitude and actions. This is to be the light and the salt in the community we live in, so that we may be effective witnesses for Christ. By our good example we will draw men to Jesus.

Firstly, notice that we are to “make the most of every opportunity”. We have an old saying: “Strike while the iron is hot”. That means never to let an opportunity pass by when we have an open door to share Christ and lead souls to God. The NKJV says, “redeeming the time” – that is, “don’t waste time” or “buy up time” to share the Gospel. The suggestion is that we should try our utmost to create opportunities to preach Christ.

Secondly, we are to be gracious in our speech: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt…” We should never be harsh or judgmental when we converse with people, especially outsiders. Kind and gracious words and a gentle demeanor will win hearts even when they seemingly do not agree with our witness at first. Later, on reflection they may think over our graciousness and what we say to them about Jesus.

Thirdly, our speech should always “be seasoned with salt”. Salt makes people thirsty – and in this case thirsty for God and Christ. That is because the way we share the Gospel with love and grace attracts people and makes them want to know more. This gives further opportunity to share our testimony about Christ and what He has done for us.

Lastly, seasoning our speech with salt will enable us to “know how to answer everyone”. Our “salty speech” may create a positive response from the hearer so that we will know how to continue wisely with our testimony. Remember that the Lord has given us “the Spirit of love, power and sound mind” (2 Tim.1:7 -NKJV). Trusting and depending on the Holy Spirit will enable us to be effective witnesses for Christ. For Christ promises us that “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8). Being “powerful” witnesses means that we will be effective and successful in sharing the Gospel and lead people to Christ. We will become good and effective soulwinners! AMEN.
