LIVING WITH TOMORROW IN MIND
(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 29)
The uncertainty of life is very real as we are not in control of our life or destiny. Hence the Bible asks a sobering question: “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Because of this, the Psalmist wisely prayed, “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psa.90:12).
We know that wisdom is living in the fear of God. Solomon wrote: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Prov.9:10). The Apostle Paul instructs believers thus: “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Eph.5:17). Unfortunately, many believers live according to their own whims and fancy – which is living a self-willed and selfish life. Seeking God’s will has a price and many are not willing; as that would be deemed too much of a sacrifice.
But what is our “sacrifice” compared to what Christ has done for us? C T Studd, Scholar and Sportsman, who became a millionaire at 34, surrendered his life to Christ, and gave up everything to become a missionary to Africa. He said, “If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him”.
What should the Love and Sacrifice of Christ mean to us today? The Bible gives the answer: “The Love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him Who died for them and rose again” (2 Cor.5:14-15).
We are now living in the last days of the End Time. The Signs of the Times given by our Lord in Matthew 24 have all been fulfilled. That means the Trumpet may sound any time and we will be taken up (1 thess.4:16-17; 1 Cor.15:51-53). Hence the Bible exhorts us to live wisely and not to be asleep spiritually: “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed” (Rom.13:11).
The Apostle James now gives this advice, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow” (James 4:13-14a). We do not know what tomorrow holds, but God holds our tomorrow in His hands. Our tomorrow belongs to God Who determines what is in store for us mortals. If we are truly His children who love Him, then we should submit our life and will to Him. Let us live for Him today and He will take care of our tomorrows. He is the Faithful God Who loves us dearly.
The Lord Jesus gave this command: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will worry about its own things” (Matt.6:33-34). Live for Jesus today and every day and He will take care of our tomorrow. Praise God!
