LIVING WITH HEAVEN AND ETERNITY IN MIND

(Biblical & Spiritual Exhortations: BSE 30)

This world is not our home for we are just pilgrims passing through. It is just a temporary abode for true disciples of Christ. Paul tells us that “Our citizenship is in Heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ…Who will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His Glorious Body” (Phil. 3:20-21). Our permanent home is Heaven where the Lord Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us. He said, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you may also be where I am” (John 14:2-3). Let us not be bogged down by the things of this evil world and miss getting there. We are not to “love the world and the things of the world” for to be “a friend of the world is to become an enemy of God” (1 Jn 2:15; Jas 4:4). Can such a person go to Heaven?

We should not just think of going to Heaven but also of the reward awaiting us if we live rightly and expectantly. Paul lived like that, and at the end of his life he could say with assurance:“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the Crown of Righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, will award me on that Day – and not only to me, but also to all who love His Appearing” (2 Tim.4:7-8- NKJV). May we be able to also to say the same when our time on earth is up!

The Lord Jesus tells us that one day when we stand before Him on the Day of Reckoning, there will be those who will “miss the boat”, so to speak. But to those who have been faithful to Him and His service, He will say: “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the Joy of your Lord” (Matt.25: 21). Christ told the Church concerning His Return: “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Rev.22:12). Let us look forward to His reward which He gives to those who love Him.

How do we show our love for God and Christ? The only way is to live for Him in total surrender and in sacrificial service for His Kingdom. Moses is a great example of one who lived that way. The Bible tells us about this: “By faith Moses, when he became of agerefused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he lookled to the reward” (Heb.11:24-26).

Notice the four things Moses decided: “He refused…he chose…he esteemed…he looked”. The decision he made was in view of eternity and the heavenly reward he would receive. Paul made the same kind of decision when he chose to live for Christ. He said, “But whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” (Phil.3:7-8).

May we be like Moses and Paul and make the right choices and decisions for Christ!
