SONS AND CITIZENS OF THE KINGDOM (part 2)

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 2)

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke about nine “Blessedness” (Mtt 5:3-11) that will be the portion of the citizen of the Kingdom. These are the “The Beautitudes”, and they have to do with the “heart attitudes” of the sons of the Kingdom. They are non-negotiables, as they are to part and parcel of our life so that we can impact the community we live in.

Once these nine “Blessedness” are internalized in our life, the impact on the world will be obvious. The citizen will then become the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world”. Both salt and light have a great impact on the daily lives of the people in the world. Can you imagine a world without salt and without light? Now we see the importance of the Christian influence on the world when they become the “salt” and the “light”! We do indeed have a great mission and responsibility! Christians are to be society and world changers by their witness as salt and light! The influence of Salt:

We look first at what our Lord said concerning “salt”: “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” (Matt. 5:13). This is a divine appointment: “You are the salt of the earth”. The moment you believe in Jesus and have experienced His transforming power, you become His salt in the world. This influence is to reach the whole earth!

There are two main uses of salt:

  1. It prevents corruption and preserves food from going bad – like salted vegetables and salted fish. The Christian’s influence in society must have the same impact – morally and spiritually. His presence deters immoral practices and social corruption and helps people to see the value of righteousness, justice and mercy.
  2. Salt gives taste to food and makes people yearn for more. The life and witness of the victorious citizen make people hunger and thirst for God and righteousness.

Our Lord then gives a warning: “but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men”. If salt loses its “saltiness”, then it has no value. That is the same as a Christian – if he loses his testimony by not living a Christlike life, then he is of no use to the Kingdom of God. The result? It is then “good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men”. In other words, he will be despised by men and trampled upon as a “fake” and bring dishonor to his King.

If men throw out “useless” salt, what would the King do? Isn’t His standard higher than that of man’s? The fact is that “un-saltiness” reveals that one is not a true son or citizen of the Kingdom. For every true son is born again of the Spirit and by His mighty power, thus making him “salty”. Let us then live up to our divine calling as “the salt of the earth”!

Let us draw all men to Jesus by being the light and the salt in society!
