SONS AND CITIZENS OF THE KINGDOM (part 3)

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 3)

The sons of the Kingdom are to be“the light of the world”. Our Lord said, “You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven” (Matt.5:14-16). Jesus Himself had declared earlier: “I AM the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John :12). We are to be the shining light - like Jesus!

This is a great honor given to us but at the same time bears a great responsibility. In other words, we are to be like Him, Who is the True Light. He has lighted up our life and now we must let that light shine in the world of darkness. Jesus likens us (the light) to a town built on a hill, very noticeable even from a distance. The sons of the Kingdom are like that – people can “spot” them a mile away because of the of the “light” in their lives. This “light” is the transformed life in Christ, which makes them different from others and makes them “stand out” in a world of darkness. Our light points people to the Greater Light in King Jesus.

The power of the light in the sons of the Kingdom casts such a great influence that people will give glory to God. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify the Father in Heaven”. Paul exhorted the believers thus: “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky” (Phil.2:14-15). The life and conduct of the sons is a testimony to the reality and power of God in their lives. This will attract people to Christ the True Light, and also glorify the Father in Heaven.

Jesus promised us that when we follow Him, we will “never walk in darkness but will have the light of life”. People living in sin and bondage are in darkness. They have no direction and they do not know where they are going. Christ the Light will lighten up their “dark” lives and brighten every step they take if they believe and follow Him. Notice, Jesus said they will “never walk in darkness” ever again, because the Light of God has shone into their lives. Hallelujah! No religion or philosophy can do that – only Jesus. So, when we let our light shine, we display the power of the risen Christ and make people yearn for the Light in Him.

Spiritually speaking, light illuminates and enlightens the mind and heart of man. In Christ we receive wisdom and understanding of spiritual things and the spirit world. Through the Holy Spirit He reveals “all things” to us so that we can walk in the ways of God and please Him. Christians receiving this spiritual light can now explain to seekers who want to know God and the things of Heaven. Go and be the light shining in a dark world! The Prophet Isaiah encourage God’s people with his prophetic word: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the Glory of the LORD rises upon you” (Isa.60:1). Let us shine and glorify our Lord!
