THE POWER OF THE KINGDOM
(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 4)
Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, some of you who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the Kingdom of God has come with power” (Mark 9:1). He was referring to His Resurrection which would usher in the Kingdom of God with His Authority and Power. After His Resurrection, He commissioned His disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations” with the assurance that “All authority in Heaven and earth has been given to Me” (Matt.28:18-19). Then He sent down His Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost after He had promised, “In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…You will receive Power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be My witnesses” (Acts 1:5, 8).
The Holy Spirit is the Presence and Power of God Who will establish the Kingdom of God through the preaching of the Gospel with signs and wonders. That is why the Gospel is referred as “the Gospel of the Kingdom”. It is the Good News because the Holy Spirit will destroy the kingdom of Satan by His Power. Wherever Jesus went and ministered, He cast out demons and healed the sick. He said, “If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God come upon you” (Matt.12:28).
When Jesus sent out the Twelve and the Seventy to preach, He told them, “As you go, proclaim this message, “The Kingdom of Heaven has come”. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons” (Matt.10:7-8). The Lord had given them authority and power to heal the sick and cast out demons (Matt.10:1). They were to exercise their authority to heal the sick and cast out demons in the Name of Jesus by the Power of the Holy Spirit. That is why in the Great Commission, besides preaching the Gospel the disciples were also to heal the sick and cast out demons to manifest the Power of the Kingdom. In doing so, we are declaring that King Jesus has come to conquer and to reign.
But there is another important factor: the Christian disciple must always exhibit this Kingdom Power in his life and wherever he is. Paul told the Church, “For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power…For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor.4:20; Rom.14:17). Talking about the Kingdom is useless without manifesting its power. We must back up our “talk” with our “walk” of Christlike behavior. We need to show by our life the Presence of the Holy Spirit – i.e. a righteous life, and a life of joy and peace. These are powerful testimonies to the Power of Jesus and His Kingdom in our life. That makes us different from the non-believers. By our “powerful” witness we glorify our King and make people want to have Him in their lives. The Lord Jesus has given us His Authority over the kingdom of darkness. He said, “I have given you Authority… over all the power of the enemy and no harm shall come to you” (Luke 10:19). Praise God! So let us boldly walk in faith and do what He has commanded
