THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BELIEVER

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 5)

When a person believes and receives Jesus into his life, he is “born again” into the Family of God (John 1:12-13; 3:3-5). The Holy Spirit lives in him and adopts him as child of God and so he can call God “Father”: “And by Him (the Holy Spirit) we cry “Abba, Father”. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children” (Rom. 8:15-16). This is a great privilege for which we must be ever grateful, for even angels cannot call God “Father”. No religion in the world teaches that God is our Father, nor can anyone call Him that except sinners saved by Grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!

The Holy Spirit in him assures of his salvation and sonship. A religious and devout person can never have this assurance; he will always live in doubt, not knowing whether he has done enough to “gain” salvation and Heaven. God’s Word assures us thus: “The Spirit (of God) bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children” (Rom.8:16). Inside of us there is a quiet assurance that all is well because we are God’s children. This is the testimony of the Holy Spirit in us speaking to our human spirit and assuring us that God is our Father. A person may go to Church all his life or even born into a Christian family, and yet will not have this assurance until he is “born again” of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit in us is God’s Seal guaranteeing that one day we will be with Him in Heaven: “When you believed, you were marked in Him with a Seal, the Promised Holy Spirit, Who is a Deposit guaranteeing our inheritance (in Heaven) until the redemption (when Jesus takes us up) of those who are God’s possession – to the Praise of His Glory” (Eph.1:13-14). The Bible tells us that God has prepared all believers for their “home coming” in Heaven.

An assurance is given us in 2 Cor.5:5-8: “Now the One Who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, Who has given us His Spirit as a Deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord…We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and be at home with the Lord (in Heaven)”. Hence our Lord Jesus said, “Very truly I say to you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3). Those who are “born again” have the Holy Spirit living in them, guaranteeing that they are saved from their sins and ready for Heaven when God calls them home.

The experience of being born again results in the joy of salvation, peace and assurance in life. This happens when we believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and receive Him as Savior and Lord of our lives. He forgives our sins and gives us Eternal Life. There is no more fear of death; nor any uncertainty a out our relationship with God the Father. Hence, we live a life of Praise and Thanksgiving for the assurance of salvation we have in Christ!
