THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BELIEVER (part 3)
(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 7)
The Holy Spirit is the best Gift that Father God has given us in our life (Luke 11:11-13). He also gives us this precious promise: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but (the Spirit) of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Tim.1:7-NKJV). The spirit of fear is from the devil and any kind of undue fear we have has its root in demonic presence. The Bible says, “Fear has torment” (1 John 4:18b). The devil always torments people and makes their lives miserable because he is evil. Fear is a curse from the devil.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Power: “for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but (the Spirit) of Power…” That is what Christ promised us before He ascended into Heaven: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). This power is to overcome Satan: “For greater is He (the Holy Spirit) Who is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The Bible says, “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7-8). You speak in faith: “Resist him, standing firm in your faith” (1 Pet.5:9). For Jesus said, “I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy (Satan) and no harm will come near you” (Luke 10:19). Let us exercise our authority by faith in the Name of Jesus.
Secondly, He is the Spirit of Love. There are two great powers in the world – the power of love and the power of hatred. Love is of God, for God is Love (1 John 4:7-8); and hatred is from the devil who is evil. Love forgives, heals and restores. It gives hope and assurance and peace. Hate destroys and holds people in bondage to fear; that is what the devil does. When one believes in Christ and submits to His Lordship,“the love of God is poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us” (Rom.5:5b). Hence, we can love even our enemies and forgive them just like Jesus did. It is not human love (which is usually selfish) but the love of God that gives us the power to forgive and do good to our enemies.
Thirdly, He is the Spirit of Sound Mind or Wisdom. Many people go “crazy” because of demonic bondage, or when things go wrong beyond control and they feel hopeless. The believer in Christ is given soundness of mind and wisdom to discern and find a solution in times of extreme adversity and trouble. God will give him peace and wisdom to know just what to do in the most difficult situation. That is why the Bible exhorts us always to “walk in the Spirit…and keep in step with the Spirit” (Gal.5:16, 25). When we do that then the devil will never have a chance to harm us. The Holy Spirit will always help us to walk in the perfect will of God and protect us from the wiles of the enemy. Praise the Lord!
The Christian should always be led by the Holy Spirit: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Rom.8:14). That means those who not led by God’s Spirit are being led by the evil spirit. The word “led” also means “controlled”. When we live under the Lordship of Christ, we are controlled and led by His Spirit.
