THE STEWARDSHIP OF OUR LIFE

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 11)

Our life is not our own; it belongs to God by right of Creation and by right of Redemption. God created us for Himself so that we may glorify Him by worship and submission to His Lordship. He has also redeemed us by the Blood of His Son, so we belong to Him lock, stock and barrel, so to speak. The Bible says, “You are not your own; you have been bought with a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit” (1 Cor.6:20). It is in living for God’s glory that we find fulfillment, joy and blessing.

The urgency of being a good steward in living for God and His glory is seen in the brevity of our life. The Bible says, “For what is your life? It is like the vapor that appears for a little while and then it is gone” (Jas 4:14). Life is like a passing shadow and in no time at all we will have to stand before the Lord Jesus to give an account of our life (2 Cor.5:10). CT Studd said, “Only one life and it will soon be past; Only what’s done for Christ will last”. How very true! The things of this world – what we do for ourselves – will pass away. Only those things we do for Christ and the Gospel will last for eternity.

Another reason for the urgency of stewardship is the soon Return of Christ, known as the Rapture, when the last trump will sound and the holy remnant will be taken up and the rest left behind (1 Thes.4:16-17; 2 Cor.15:51-53). This may happen sooner than we like to think! It will be sudden and unexpected – coming like a thief in the night. Hence, we must always be ready so that we will not be left behind, like the foolish virgins (Mtt.25:1-13).

How then can we be good stewards in our life?
1 Surrender our life and assets to Christ, knowing that all we are and have belong to Him. We do this because of His mercies and we are grateful to Him: “Therefore by the mercies of God, present your body as a living sacrifice to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Rom.12:1).

2. Serve the Lord fervently so that we may be counted worthy to receive His blessings on earth and His reward in Heaven.

3. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. That means we are to honor Him and live a holy life to glorify Him. In doing so we will never lack anything in this life because He promises to provide for us (Matt.6:33; Phil.4:19).

4. Set your heart on Him and on things above and not on this temporal world which will fade away. Then when Christ appears you will also appear with Him in glory (Col.3:1-4).

5. Seek to make your life count for Jesus and for eternity. You will never regret for this in this life and the next, for great will be your reward. Let us be reminded that “the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and watchful, and have fervent love for one another” (1 Peter 4:7-8). May the Lord help us to love His appearing.
