THE STEWARDSHIP OF OUR BLESSINGS

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 12)

The Bible says that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the Heavenly Lights Who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17). The gifts of life and health – all these, including the gift of wealth, are from God. Hence the Psalmist said to himself: “Praise the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name. Bless the Lord O my soul, and forget not all His benefits (blessings)” (Psa.103:1-2).

Moses reminded Israel, after they were delivered from the bondage of Israel, to be thankful to God and worship Him. They are not to forget His blessings: “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land He has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God…Otherwise when you eat and are satisfied, and when you build fine houses and settle down…and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God…You may even say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me”. But remember the LORD your God, for it is He Who gives you the ability to produce wealth…” (Deut.8:11-18).

What an apt warning! In my 65 years of ministry, I have seen many Christians becoming unthankful and left the Church and the Lord because they have become successful and wealthy. When they were not doing so well, they were “spiritual” and “faithful” in Church and ministry. They prayed for God to bless them and when He did bless them, they later had no time for Him and became worldly and gradually forsook the Lord. How sad and how tragic! May none of us will ever become like them! For our salvation is at stake!

Blessings received must be used responsibly. Jesus said, “Freely you received, freely give” (Matt. 10: 8b). We cannot keep God’s blessings selfishly to ourselves. We must give them to the Lord and to His ministry, to extent His kingdom on earth. We must also bless the poor: “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward him for what he has done” (Prov.19:17). The Bible also exhorts us thus: “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first-fruits of your crops (earnings), then your barns (your assets) will be filled to overflowing…” (Prov.3:9). Jesus said that “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

In the Abrahamic Covenant God made to him and to us (Gal.3:13-14), the Lord promised: “I will bless you ...and you will be a blessing…and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Gen.12:2-3). This means that the reason God blesses us is that we must be a blessing to others. When we bless others, God will then bless us so much that we can bless the peoples in the world through the Gospel so that we can fulfill the Great Commission. God’s blessings are to be used for missionary purposes. The more we give to missions the more the blessings will increase! In Phil.4:14-19, Paul tells us that God will provide all our needs constantly when we give generously to His work. Let us be good stewards of His blessings
