THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SOULWINNING

(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 17)

The NT Church was born on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the 120 disciples prayerfully waiting in the Upper Room. The Spirit-filled disciples then went out preaching the Gospel. This resulted in 3,000 souls saved and baptized on that Day. In the days that followed, we read thus: “Day by day the Lord added to the Church those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47). There was a tremendous increase of new converts as the Holy Spirit empowered the believers with boldness to preach the Gospel to people in Jerusalem.

The lesson we learn here is that every believer filled with the Holy Spirit is a witness and a soulwinner! That is what Christ promised: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8). They became powerful witnesses because of the Holy Spirit directing and enabling them with the spiritual gifts He endowed on them. Many do not witness because of fear. The Bible says, “God has not given us the spirit of fear but (the Spirit) of love, power and sound mind” (2 Tim.1:7-KJV). The Holy Spirit replaces the spirit of fear that is in us with His love, power and wisdom. Boldness of the Holy Spirit now replaces the fear inside so that nothing can stop us from talking about Jesus in our life!

The Holy Spirit is the Lord of the Harvest and His main intention for every believer is that they will all be soulwinners for Christ. We are to reap the Harvest that is ripe already before it is too late (John 4:35). We are now living in the last days and we must win as many souls as we can before the Trumpet sounds and we are taken up to be with Jesus (1 Thess.4:16-17). Souls are the only commodity we can bring with us to Heaven; for we cannot bring our wealth and assets to Heaven. This is what Jesus meant when He told us to “lay up treasures in Heaven and not on earth” (Matt.6:18-19).

The devil knows that his time is short, and so seeks to destroy God’s work. But he will not be able to. However, he can try to influence people to Hell with him by blinding their minds with the worship of false gods. He will create new cults and religions to draw people away from the Truth so that they will believe a lie. Then he will influence Christians to become worldly and complacent so that they will not be useful to God. He will put fear into their hearts so that Christians will not dare to witness for Christ.

The Bible says that “the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; he who is wise wins souls” (Prov.11:30). Christians are made righteous in Christ and therefore they are to be trees producing the fruit of evangelism, which is soul winning. Those who are wise will win souls because souls are the only commodity we can bring with us to Heaven, not earthly goods. This is why our Lord commanded us: “You have not chosen Me but I have chosen you and appointed you to GO and bear fruit, and that you fruit should remain” (John 15:16). We are saved to save others for His Kingdom. May the Lord help us to fulfill His command and will.
