THE CHURCH AND MISSIONS
(Biblical Teachings on The Christian Life.: BTCL 22)
The Bible says that God loves the whole world. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son…” John in his Epistle states: “He is the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 Jn 2:2). God offers salvation to the whole world in His Son, so that they can be saved. That’s Divine Love and Grace.
God wills all mankind to be saved: “God our Savior wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself as a Ransom for all people” (1 Tim.2:4-6). The Apostle Peter states more strongly: “…He does not want anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Pet.3:9) so that they can be saved.
God’s heart is for all mankind. That is why the Lord commands us to “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every person…Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Mk 16:15; Matt. 28:19). That is why John Wesley declared, “The world is my parish” – not just England. Our risen Lord says that “You are My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). We are to begin where we are, and then to extend that witness to our neighbors and then to the ends of the earth. This must be our missionary endeavor! The Church exists for the cause of missions – to make Christ known to all the peoples of the world!
Hence the focus of our mission must be on the Unreached People Groups of the world – those who have never heard of Jesus the Savior. This was Paul’s vision and mission: “It has always been my ambition to preach the Gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written, “Those who were not told about Him will see, and those who have not heard will understand” (Rom.15:20-21).
Today, there are still over two billion people in the world who have not yet heard of Christ. How can they hear unless we make a deliberate attempt to reach them by sending out and supporting missionaries? That is a great harvest. We need to heed our Lord’s command: “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are so few. Pray therefore the Lord of the Harvest that He may send out laborers into His harvest fields” (Lk 10:2).
That is why we need to be at the Prayer Meeting to pray for our missionaries and mission fields. That is why we have Mission Camps and not just pleasure camps; we have mission trips and not just holiday trips. We put our resources – men and money - in missions, and not in acquiring more comforts for our congregation. We should and must invest in missions with the resources God has blessed with – as much as we can!
The urgency of missions is the Rapture which may take place any moment. The trumpet may sound very soon, and how will we face the Lord – if we should be taken up! We must each give an account of our lives to Him at His Judgement Seat (2 Cor.5:10).
