WHO ARE OUR ENEMIES?
(Spiritual Warfare: SW 03)
The Apostle Paul tells us that“We struggle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph.6:12 –KJV). At the head of these forces of darkness is the devil himself, or better known as Satan. They are unseen spiritual powers called demons or evil spirits who are fallen angels. So, we cannot fight them with physical strength or weapons.
Paul also tells us that “though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Cor.10:3-4) We are fighting against invisible spiritual and supernatural powers, and therefore physical combat and weapons will not be effective. The Bible tells us the “the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). The devil is also called “the prince of the power of the air” and “the god of this world” (Eph.2:2; 2 Cor.4:4). For reasons we do not know, God allows Satan that kind of power, even the power of death (Heb.2:14), and with his demonic subordinates mentioned above, he holds people in captivity.
Satan also uses his power and demonic forces to captivate complacent and unspiritual Christians and “persecute” or “terrorize” them with his evil ways. Many such believers are held under bondage in unbelief, evil habits and negative thinking or evil thoughts. Others are captives because of lust, unforgiveness and worldly ways. For the spiritual Christian, Satan uses temptations and unspiritual men to trouble them so that they will be hindered from loving and serving God. He may also attack us with sickness, fear and intimidation, etc.
What then is our defense against the devil?
Firstly, we need to know the knowledge that our Lord Jesus has already destroyed the devil and his works: “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8b; John 10:10).
Secondly, we know that Satan and his cohorts are already defeated foes. For Christ has already “disarmed the powers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the Cross” (Col.2:15). Satan is like an angry dog on a leash, and cannot harm us unless we want to let him.
Thirdly, Jesus also said that “I have given you authority to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19). We have authority and power over Satan and his evil forces in the Name of Jesus Christ. Just tell him, “Get behind me, Satan, in the Name of Jesus” and he will be gone. We have the power to bind him and render him powerless in the Name of Jesus.
Fourthly, we overcome him by the Blood of the Lamb (Rev.12:11). There is Power of His Blood. We must exercise our faith in rebuking and resisting the devil in the Name of Jesus and and he will flee from us (1 Pet.5:7). HALLELUJAH!
