THE ARMOUR OF GOD

(Spiritual Warfare: SW 08)

Having exhorted the believers to prepare themselves spiritually for the battle ahead, Paul tells them, “Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (Eph.6:13). This “full armour of God” is described in Ephesians 6:14-17.

The first part of the Armor is the Belt of Truth: “Stand firm then, with the Belt of Truth buckled around your waist” (v.14). In the Roman soldier’s armor, the Belt holds together the whole armor. Without this belt, the armor will fall and the soldier cannot function. So, it is actually the most important piece of the whole armor. For the Christian it is also true. If one is not equipped with the Belt of Truth, we will be defenseless and easily defeated. The devil is a liar and he uses lies and deception and heresy (false teaching) to trick the Christian and lead him astray.

The Belt of Truth for the Christian soldier is the Word of God. Truth is the Foundation of the Christian Faith, for our God is the God of Truth, Jesus is the Truth, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. The Bible is the Word of Truth because it comes from God. Jesus said that “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt.4:14). He also said that “You will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free” (John 8:32). The Apostle John says that all believers must walk in the Truth and declares that “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the Truth” (3 John 4).

The Word of God is also the Sword of the Spirit, which we use in fighting the enemy (Eph 6:17). In the Temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4), He overcame Satan by quoting Scripture three times, saying“It is written” . At each Scripture thrown at him, the devil was defeated. That is why the Apostle Paul said, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds" (2 Cor.10:4). The Divine Power is the Word of God used in the Anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible says that "The Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Heb.4:12). In Evangelism and in Spiritual Warfare, the Word of God is our spiritual weapon. Quoting Scripture and using it defeats the work of the devil in the unbeliever and in ministry. When an unbeliever has the Word of God in his heart (that is, when he remembers Scripture quoted to him), the Holy Spirit will turn it into a sword and convict him until he responds in repentance and faith.

The Bible tells us that “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom.10:17). The word “hearing” also means “obedience” which is responding positively to the conviction brought about by the Word of God in him. So let us be faithful to the Word of God and in faith use it wisely to win sous and defeat the devil.
