THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

(Spiritual Warfare: SW 09)

The second piece of the Christian armor is the Breastplate of Righteousness (Eph.6:14). The Breastplate covers the frontal part of the soldier’s body, from the neck down to the loins. It protects all the important organs in the body – the heart, the lungs, the kidneys, liver, stomach, etc. This gives the soldier confidence to go forward in the battle and ensures his safety. Without this Breastplate the soldier will be unsure and afraid of being killed easily.

The Gospel of Truth brings righteousness to the believer: “For in the Gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from the first to the last, just as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith” (Rom.1:17). It is in righteousness that the believer has a spiritual relationship and walk with God, which is also his protection against evil forces.

The Breastplate of Righteousness keeps the heart pure and holy and therefore no lies and deception of the enemy can enter his soul. The Breastplate protects him from temptation and all worldliness so that he will not be vulnerable to the devil’s attacks. One of the ways of the devil is to attack the heart of the Christian and make him desire the wrong things instead of loving God and desiring His ways. He does this through various temptations.

In the Parable of the Sower, the seed that fell among the thorns was unfruitful because it fell into the devil’s trap: “Still others, like the seed sown among the thorns, hear the Word, but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desire for other things choke the Word, making it unfruitful” (Mark 4:18-19). That is why the Word commands us, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).

Christianity has to do with the heart, because it has to do with relationship. Relationship with God and with one another starts and ends with the heart. We are to believe in God and His Word with all our heart. We are to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength, and our neighbor as ourselves” (Matt.22:37-39). When the heart is right with God and loves God then it is like a fortress against the devil’s wiles. The Breastplate of Righteousness is meant to protect our relationship with God by not allowing the enemy to have a hold on the heart by distracting it through an alternative love – i.e. love of money, loving the world and sinful ways, etc.

God speaks to his people to persuade them to be wise: “My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words…Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Prov. 4:20, 23). The heart is created to believe in God and love Him always; then we will not need anything else. So let us protect it with His Breastplate of Righteousness so that we will never be separated from God and His love. The heart can be easily deceived if one is not walking closely with the Holy Spirit. “Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Gal.5:16).
