THE HELMET OF SALVATION
(Spiritual Warfare: SW 12)
The Fifth Component in the Christian armor is the Helmet of Salvation (Eph.6:17). The Helmet protects the head from injury by any weapon hitting against it. The head is the most important part of the body, as it is the “motor” that generates energy to every muscle, nerve, bone and action. It is the “eye” and “wisdom” of the whole body because of the brain inside. Without the head, the body is lifeless.
Similarly, as in the natural so is the spiritual. The head is where the mind has been renewed to think the thoughts of God and understand and discern the things of God through the Holy Spirit. It is also with the mind we understand the doctrine of salvation and the redemptive work of Christ, revealed spiritually through the Spirit of God. The devil attacks our mind to make us think wrongly or worldly.
Peter the Leader of the Apostolic Band was deceived by Satan to rebuke Jesus when He told them that He would be rejected and taken by the Pharisees and religious leaders to be crucified. Jesus said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan. For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men” (Mark 8:33). Satan had infiltrated Peter’s mind to make him think negatively and in the flesh. Satan cannot read our thoughts but he can put his thoughts into our minds, and make us think like the people of the world, who are under his control (1 John 5:19).
Before our conversion , Satan had actually made us think adversely to God’s ways and purposes in Christ. He blinds the minds of all unbelievers so that they cannot see the Glory of Christ (2 Cor.4:4). He makes them hostile towards God and causes them to be enemies of God in their minds (Rom.8:6-7; Col.1:21). Thus, he makes men turn against God.
After conversion Satan then tries to deceive the believer into worldly thinking and draws him away from God. Paul warned the Church about this: “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (2 Cor.11:3). Some of Paul’s fellow-workers were even led astray by “setting their minds on earthly things” and gave up their ministry (Phil.3:19).
The Helmet of Salvation protects us from “the wiles of the evil one”. However, we still need to be disciplined in our walk with God. To protect our mind from going astray, the Bible exhorts us to doing the following:
