PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT WITH ALL PERSEVERANCE

(Spiritual Warfare: SW 14)

Putting on the whole Armor of God is just the start. The next important step is Prayer: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (Eph.6:18). While the Armor is a preventive measure, prayer is the ultimate “weapon”. It is the one thing that will guarantee victory and success in spiritual warfare. Prayer is total dependence on God and ensures victory!

Spiritual warfare is a corporate involvement. Like any war, the whole nation is involved while every good citizen must participate in defense and frontline activity. We are the Body of Christ and so protecting the saints is a vital activity all must be involved in. Hence the exhortation: “Praying always…with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”. Praying for one another is imperative for the Body to be strong and safe. Prayer is also protection for all the saints.

Acts 12 is an example of the power of corporate prayer. The Apostle Peter was in prison, to be killed the next day. But the whole Church gathered in the home of Mary to pray for him. Even before they ended their Prayer Meeting, God was already answering their prayer by sending an angel to free Peter miraculously from prison. Peter came knocking on the door while they were still praying. How quickly God answers corporate prayer. Jesus gives us a guarantee for all who pray together: “Again I say to you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they ask, it shall be done for them of My Father in Heaven” (Mtt.18:19)

That is why the Corporate Prayer Meeting is so vital to the Church. The one thing the devil would seek to do is to stop Christians from praying together. Praying for the saints also prevents the devil from attacking the believers. One reason why Christians grow cold and stop attending Church regularly is because the devil has conquered them spiritually. Satan can win because we allow him to by not praying for one another and for not praying together.

Notice the two words emphasized by Paul – “praying always and with perseverance”. “Always” means “all the time” and “perseverance” means “endurance” or “persistency”. There should be no let-up in our praying. We must keep on “praying with all perseverance” and in the Holy Spirit. That is discipline as well as devotion! The Holy Spirit will give us anointing and strength as well as providing insight and wisdom in what we are praying. He will show and guide us concerning the things or people we are praying for. That is effective praying! It is also powerful intercession!

Whether we like it or not, the moment we acknowledge Christ as Lord we are already in a spiritual battle. The devil has declared war on us (Rev.12:17) and he will attack every Christian ruthlessly. We need to pray for one another as well as for ourselves to survive and walk in victory. May God help us to be committed to Him and to one another! The Church that prays together will stay together – VICTORIOUSLY!
