KNOWING AND WALKING IN GOD’S WILL

(Walking In God’s Will : WIGW 3)

God’s will and ways are higher than our ways, so they are always better. That is why we must desire to do what He wants, not what we want. Sometimes what He tells us may not be what our carnal mind and heart like or want. God Himself says: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts higher than your thoughts” (Isa.5:8-9). His plans for us are for good - to give us hope and a good future (Jer 29:11).

God reveals His will and way through the Holy Scriptures and by His Holy Spirit. That is why we must make Scripture the Authority and Foundation of our life: “For man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt.4:4). The Holy Spirit may use Scripture to guide us into God’s will or He may speak to us directly. Hence, we need to “be filled with the Holy Spirit and walk in the Spirit” (Eph 5:18; Gal.5:16).

The Holy Spirit will reveal God’s mind and ways to those who love God (1 Cor.2:9-12). For, he who loves God will do anything to please God and walk in obedience. Our Lord said, “If you love Me, keep my commandments” (Jn 14:15). God will not reveal to us His will unless He knows that in our heart we will obey, like David did: “He will do everything I want him to do” (Acts 13:22).

The Lord is the Living God and He speaks to His children, like any earthly father who speaks frequently to his children. Jesus our Shepherd said, “My sheep hear My voice; I know them and they follow Me” (Jn 10:27). Why is it that some Christians don’t hear His voice? Could it be because the Lord knows we will not listen and obey? Notice these words, “I know them and they follow Me”. That implies that Jesus only speaks to those He knows in their hearts that they will follow Him! The word “hear” also means “to listen and obey”. Eli advised young Samuel that when he hears God’s voice calling him, he should answer: “Speak, LORD, your servant heareth” – i.e. “Your servant is listening and will obey” (1 Sam 3:9).

Because God is Holy and Perfect His will is perfect (Rom 12:2) and so is His Word and way: “As for God His way is perfect; the Word of the LORD is flawless” (2 Sam 22:31). His way is the best way. So why are we afraid to know His will and way? In the Garden, the serpent deceived and lied to Eve to doubt God’s Word and command. That was hers and Adam’s downfall. Satan is doing the same thing over and over again by making Christians doubt God’s Word and afraid to hear what God is saying. Our greatest mistake is to doubt God’s Word and disobey Him. Let us remember that God is Love and He is our Heavenly Father and “no good thing will He withhold from those who trust in Him and walk uprightly before Him” (Ps 84:11-12). Jesus said that He will always give only good things to His loving children (Matt. 7:11). God promises us that His plans for us is always for our good, to prosper us and give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). So let us trust Him at all times!
