WARNING AGAINST WALKING WRONGLY
(Walking In God’s Will : WIGW 6)
The Apostle Jude warns Christians against three errors which we all must avoid for our spiritual health and security. He wrote about those who did so:
“Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion” (v.11). Notice the condemnation:
“Woe to them!” This is a pronouncement of judgment and an eternal curse.
These three errors result in serious consequences of damnation. Let us avoid them but understand what they really are.
1. The Way of Cain.
Cain and Abel were brothers. Cain killed Abel out of anger and jealousy (Gen.4). Cain killed his brother because God accepted Abel’s sacrifice and rejected his.
Hebrews 11:4 says that
“By faith Abel offered a better sacrifice and became righteous”. That means he did what God instructed and wanted, but Cain did his own thing. Anger and jealousy overwhelmed Cain and he killed his brother. We need to watch out for these two sinful emotions and put them under the control of the Holy Spirit lest they make us go the way of Cain.
2. The Error of Balaam:
Balaam was a prophet but his motive for serving God was wrong. He prophesied for money and profit. The Lord warned us that
“You cannot serve God and Mammon” (Matt 6:24). Mammon speaks of worldliness and covetousness or greed. God tells us that
“Covetousness is idolatry” (Col.3:5) and
“to be a friend of the world is to be an enemy of God” (Jas 4:4). We must always check our motive: why are we doing what we are doing? We should always live only to love God above all else and serve and honor Him only in all that we do.
3. The Rebellion of Korah:
Korah was a leader of his tribe but all leaders were under the authority of Moses whom God appointed as the overall leader of Israel.
Joshua and Caleb were also leaders of their own tribes but they respected and submitted to the leadership of Moses. (They were the only ones who entered the Promised Land). Korah rebelled against the leadership of Moses because of his pride and refused to submit to his authority. Instead, he questioned and challenged Moses’ leadership and authority which was given by God.
The result: God killed him and his whole tribe because Korah got them to rebel against Moses. In
Numbers 12, Aaron and Mariam (Moses’ brother and sister) also questioned Moses’ leadership.
Result: Mariam was stricken with leprosy (a deadly disease in those days) and Aaron died before time because of God’s judgment. Rebellion against God’s appointed leader is a serious sin.
For these three sins, God says “Woe to them!”. We need to check ourselves constantly and honestly, lest we fall into the same condemnation. May God help us.
