KNOWING GOD

(Growing in Faith, in Truth & in Spirit: GFTS 1)

The most important thing in life is to know God – Who He is, what He has done for us and what He is doing in our life. The reason is that God made us for Himself, that we might worship Him and glorify Him in every aspect of our life. For without Him we are nothing; without Him we have nothing and without Him we can do nothing. As the Bible says, “For in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).  What are the things we need to know about God so that we may find meaning in life and have the assurance of Heaven and eternal life?

1. We need to know Who God is.
He is the Creator and Eternal God: “Who was, and Who is and Who is to come” (Rev.4:8).
Isaiah 40:28: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the Everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth”.
Psalm 100:3: “Know that the Lord is God. It is He Who made us and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture”.

2. We need to know God personally by faith.
God Himself invites us to know Him: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
The word “know” here means to have a personal relationship with God through believing Who He is and inviting Him into our life by faith. The God of the Bible is the God of Love: He loves all sinners and wants to forgive their sins and make them His children. He showed that love by sending His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins and give us eternal life.
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him (Jesus) may not perish (go to Hell) but have eternal life”.
1 John 4:9-10: “This is how God showed His Love among us: He sent His One and Only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is Love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins”.

3. We need to believe and receive Jesus Christ into our life.
To have a personal relationship with God, we need to receive Jesus Christ into our life.
John 17:3: “This is eternal life: that they (sinners) may know You, the only True God, and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent’.
John 1:12: “To all who receive Him (Jesus), to those who believed in His Name, He (God) gave the right to become the children of God”.
To “receive” Christ is to invite and welcome Him into our life to forgive our sins and to acknowledge Him as Lord and Saviour. This is done through a prayer of commitment: “Lord Jesus Christ, I believe You are the Son of God and that You died for my sins and rose again the third day. Please forgive my sins and be my Lord and Saviour. Thank you, Jesus. Amen”
