SEEKING AFTER GOD

(Growing in Faith, in Truth & in Spirit: GFTS 3)

The LORD Himself testified that King David was a man after God’s own heart. The reason was because David was a “God-chaser” – one who seeks God constantly and continually. David revealed his heart for God when he prayed: “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Psa.63:1). This sounds like a man desperate for God – just as a man marooned in a desert without water. David’s soul was thirsty for God the Living Water of Life.

Seeking God to know Him is the most important thing in life. For without Him we are nothing; without Him we have nothing, and without Him we can do nothing. The Bible tells us that “in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). In fact, without Him life would be empty and has no meaning. Augustine of Hippo, a Christian theologian, scholar and philosopher once prayed: “Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in Thee”. How very true!

Another Christian Philosopher, Pasqual, said that in every man there is a “God-shaped vacuum”- meaning that without God life is empty and has no meaning or purpose. Augustine also confirmed that by saying, “He who has God has everything; he who has everything but God has nothing”. God made us in His own Image and Likeness so that only in Him will we find true life and satisfaction. John’s Gospel says, “In Him was life and that life was the Light of all mankind” (1:4). Without God we will all be in darkness and grope about aimlessly in life. That is why the Lord Jesus said, “I Am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

God loves us and desires that we earnestly seek Him. He gives seekers the assurance in His promise: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart, and I will be found by you” says the LORD” (Jer.29:13-14). This is a guarantee that God will receive all who come to Him, no matter who we are. He will reveal Himself to us so that we may know Him and have a personal relationship with Him. He says to all who believe: “I love those who love Me, and those who seek Me find Me” (Prov.8:17). So let us hasten to find Him!

We are the losers if we do not seek God; we have much to lose in terms of forgiveness, peace, eternal life and Heaven. Knowing God here is like Heaven on earth! As David said, “You will show me the path of life; in Your Presence is fulness of joy. At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psa.16:11). What more can we ask or hope for?

For the Christian, seeking God like David is to enter into a deeper relationship with Him. It will enable us to know and love Him more, resulting in a more intimate relationship. So David urges all to do that: “Look to the LORD and His Strength; seek His Face always” (1 Chron. 16:11). Let us heed his call and be blessed.
