STAND STILL AND SEE GOD AT WORK
(Growing in Faith, in Truth & in Spirit: GFTS 5)
In Exodus 14 the Israelites faced their most desperate moments as they were pursued by Pharaoh and his army in the desert. The Egyptians behind them and the Red Sea before them. They were literally between the devil and the deep sea! There seemed no hope that they would survive! Certain death looked them in the face!
It was then that Moses, the man of God shouted to the Israelites: “Do not be afraid. Stand still and see the Salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today!” (Exod.14:13 -NKJV). Instead of worry and fear at possible death, they were to “stand still and see” what the Almighty God can and will do. That is indeed a good lesson for us all. We all have our difficult and desperate moments in life which seem so hopeless - like we are in a dead end. It is in such times that the Lord tells us, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). We need to be “still” so that we can “see the salvation of the LORD” Who is Yahweh, the Great God of Creation. The word “salvation” also means “deliverance” or “rescue”. Yahweh is the Great and Mighty Deliverer Who loves and watches over His people. Let us trust in Him.
To be “still” is to wait in His Presence, worship Him and listen to His Voice. Instead of panic and fear, we need just to sit quietly in the Presence of God. It is in stillness that we can hear the “still small Voice” of the Holy Spirit speaking to us and ministering to our spirit man. Worry is often the loud voice inside us that shuts out His still small Voice. Fear makes even a louder voice and makes us do things that may even displease and dishonour the Lord. It is in stillness before Him that God removes fear and instil faith and assurance into our spirit.
It was when the Israelites obeyed and stood still that God spoke and instructed them what to do. God acted by sending the Angel of God to go behind the Israelites to stand between them and the Egyptians. He sent darkness in their camp and Light to Israel. God troubled the Egyptians and took off the wheels of their chariots to slow them down, as He instructed His people to go forward as He opened the Red Sea for them walk through. They crossed the Sea safely to the other side and drowned all the Egyptians. The Battle is the LORD’s and Victory belongs to the LORD! Hallelujah!
Throughout Israel’s history in the Old Testament, God moved and worked in miraculous ways to give them victory over their enemies and deliverance in difficult situations. This always comes through hearing God’s instructions and obeying Him. They heard God speaking and walked by faith. That is the key: Hear God and Walk by Faith!
It is when we are still before God in such difficult times that we can hear God speaking. When we hear God and decide to obey Him, then He puts faith into our heart and spirit to do what He tells us. That is when we will “see the salvation of the LORD” and experience the miracle of deliverance. Let God be God in our life. He is in control! Amen!
