KNOWING CHRIST THROUGH HOLY SCRIPTURE

(Going Forward in Christ: GFIC 23)

The Bible (also known as the Holy Scriptures) is infallible the Word of God. God reveals Himself and His will and purpose through the Scriptures. Hence, we should read His Word daily to find guidance and strength to live to please to Him. As our Lord said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matt.4:4). Reading and meditating on God’s Word is more important than food, as it builds up our faith and spiritual life. Through His Word we are enabled to overcome temptation.

The Bible also shows us how we may find and experience salvation in Christ. Paul told Timothy, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim.3:14-15). God’s Word reveals God’s Love for sinners in sending His Beloved Son Jesus Christ to be the Saviour of the world by His Death and Resurrection.

The Bible enlightens us and reveals Jesus to us so that we may understand more about Him. Jesus told the Jews, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me” (John 5:39). Almost every page of the Bible talks about Jesus – in prophecy and in promise. So reading it will enable us to know more and grow in the knowledge of Christ.

On the Road to Emmaus, Christ expounded the Scriptures to the two disciples regarding Himself in OT Prophecy: “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself” (Luke 24:27). Then in the Upper Room, He also explained to the disciples about Himself as revealed in the Scriptures. Luke records this for us: “He said to them, ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms. Then He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures” (Lk 24:44-45). Notice the words, “He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures”. This is what we must pray when we read the Bible; we need to ask Jesus to give us understanding and open our spiritual eyes to see Him in the Scriptures.

The Psalmist also prayed when seeking to know God in the Scriptures: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your Law” (119:18). The “wonderful things” are obviously about God Himself and the revelations of His Glory and purpose. The Psalmist also said, “Your Word is a lamp for my feet, and a light on my path” (119:105). May we all have the same spirit to seek to know Christ better and to walk in His way, as revealed in Holy Scripture. May we love His Word and diligently read and meditate on it daily so that we may grow in the Grace and Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
