KNOWING CHRIST THROUGH HOLY SCRIPTURE

(Going Forward in Christ: GFIC 29)

The Bible, the Word of God, is all about God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Almost every page of the Bible tells about the Lord Jesus Christ – His Birth, Life, Works and coming back again to rule the earth. If we really want to know Jesus well and grow in knowledge and faith in Him, then we must be serious and disciplined in reading and studying the Bible.

The first important thing to do before reading the Word of God is to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and understanding. The Psalmist prayed like this: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your Law” (Psalm 119:18). Very often we read and do not see clearly the things written – maybe because we are distracted by other things in our minds. The two disciples to Emmaus were like that, so that when Christ came to them, they did not recognise Him: “But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him” (Luke 24:16 – NKJV). We need also to ask the Holy Spirit to remove all distractions from our minds.

The second thing is to ask the Lord Jesus to reveal Himself to you as you read His Word. Christ Himself opened the Scriptures to His disciples when He rose from the dead.

Luke 24:25-27; 44-45:
Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself”.

44-: “Then He said to them, "These are the Words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."

45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures”. (NKJV).

Through the Holy Spirit, Christ will reveal Himself to us as we read the Word of God. Before He ascended to Heaven, He said that He will send the Holy Spirit to be our Teacher and Counselor. This is His promise: “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you… When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all Truth…” (John 14:26;16:13).

Many Christians do not grow strong in faith because they do not know their Lord well; and that is because they do not spend enough time in Worship and in the Word. Also, not knowing the Word of God well, they are easily deceived by false teachings and led astray.

Remember what our Lord said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt.4:4). The devil wants to keep us from God’s Word so that he can easily deceive and tempt us into error and sin. So let us beware and be wise! Let us determine to be faithful in reading and studying God’s Word and live by it.
